Community Irrigation Projects

Community irrigation projects are organized initiatives that enable groups of farmers to use water efficiently for crop production in arid and semi-arid areas. In Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs), these projects improve food security, household incomes, and resilience to drought by making agriculture possible throughout the year.

Objectives of Community Irrigation Projects

  • Increase food production.
  • Improve household nutrition.
  • Generate income through commercial farming.
  • Reduce dependence on rain-fed agriculture.
  • Enhance resilience to drought and climate change.
  • Create employment opportunities for youth and women.

Common Sources of Irrigation Water

Communities obtain irrigation water from:

  • Rivers and seasonal streams.
  • Boreholes.
  • Sand dams.
  • Earth dams and water pans.
  • Springs.
  • Rainwater harvesting systems.
  • Small reservoirs.

Types of Irrigation Systems

1. Drip Irrigation

Drip irrigation delivers water directly to plant roots through pipes and emitters.

Advantages

  • Saves water.
  • Reduces weed growth.
  • Increases crop yields.
  • Suitable for vegetables and fruit crops.

2. Sprinkler Irrigation

Water is sprayed over crops to simulate rainfall.

Suitable for

  • Pasture production.
  • Cereals.
  • Vegetables.
  • Fodder crops.

3. Surface Irrigation

Water flows through furrows or channels to irrigate crops.

This method is relatively inexpensive but requires careful water management to minimize losses.

4. Solar-Powered Irrigation

Solar pumps lift water from boreholes, rivers, or reservoirs without relying on diesel or grid electricity.
